Ipods, Ipods Everywhere but not a Drop to Drink

I do not own a ipod and I realise, to most, this makes me a bit of a reject from society but I've never actually felt like one until recently...

When did ipods become borring and mundune?? To me, they have been these out of reach commodities that I have sort of desired but aren't willing to part with $500 for... Why are they still so expensive if they're borring and mundune?? I'm patiently waiting for their price to come down, but at the moment it doesn't seem like its going to (They just seem to be making more accessiories so ipod buyers keep on buying)... and more and more of my friends are getting them... Should I just buy one so I can be accepted into youth culture? You know, my dad's all like, "bloody uni pedistrians, they're too preocuped by thier ipods to care about looking at the road!!!" adds quietly, "I'm glad your not like that"... Well at least my dad thinks i'm cool right? :)

I've looked at Mp3 players but ipod seem to have the manoploy on the market. One of my friends Mp3 player broke and if he owned a ipod he could buy something (I can't remember what it's called... because I'm not an owner...) to fix it, but they don't sell that sort of thing for the odd Mp3 player...

Should I get over the price and buy an ipod so I can join in the convosation?

Well, I don't own an iPod, but I have a Creative Zen Micro which I'm very pleased with. (I got it for Christmas so I'm not quite sure of the price...) I haven't had any trouble with it so far. But I do know people who own iPods who complain about the battery not lasting as long as it should (even though they did charge it correctly the first time and all that), and according to my boyfriend (whos iPod is misbehaving) the shop won't take it back to repair it, even though the guarantee is still valid. So I think you should ask around a bit before you make up your mind, just because something is really popular doesn't mean it's perfect! :)

Well, when it came out the black iPod Nano was a must-have for me. Six months later I'm on my third unit as they keep breaking because - as Apple are wont to do - they prioritised exterior design over interior design. As a result, it looks great but is a feat of crummy engineering and marketing hype. In another six months Apple will stop replacing my broken Nanos under warranty, but by then I will probably be coveting some other gadget. (Feed the kids or invest in the latest tech-fetish? It's a tough call.)

To anyone looking to buy an iPod that owns a PC.

Don't use iTunes...

For some reason all the iPods I have ever heard of stuffing up is because of iTunes on a PC (Proper Computer). If you want to use it just make your computer able to see hidden files and drag and drop all your music on to it like it was a portable usb thing.

Just to let you know...

They can be seen as mundane if you simple don't have a desire or need for such a product.

I find them boring because I have everything I need. iPod shuffle for the 2 hour bus trip everyday is fine, and as for video, an external multimedia drive that has Video & Audio Out does the job. It allows me to plug into my TV and play all my downloaded episodes and films from the internet. Watching crappy small encodes of an episode on a small iPod isn't my idea of watching.

They are still expensive because Apple has very good marketing. They are constantly releasing and upgrading the iPods. After 2 years their older generation iPods have all died, leaving no units for second hand sales and forcing everyone to always have to buy for full price retail.

They consciously started off the iPod generation 1 big and with black & white screens. Now 5 generations later they add video, it could of been added to the Generation 4 iPod Photo but for obvious reasons it was not included (you can get a hack for the iPod Photos to turn them into iPod Video).

About the battery issue, you can buy new battery packs for most generations.

Best thing to do is have a friend in Renaissance and buy them cost-price, I'd never buy it full price, they are really really overpriced!!

And as for not using iTunes on a PC with an iPods, that is rubbish. It's a great program, I've got on both my MAC and my PC. If there are any proplems its user error, there is alot of that with iPods! At my work we had 5 iPods returned (until we stopped selling them) all worked perfectly when I took them home to see what was wrong. Again down to user error.

Every time I've taken a Nano back (really kaput - no user error here!) I've had to hand it over for several weeks while it's sent to Renaissance to be assessed, before they decide it really is kaput and replace it with a new one. All the time I'm without my iPod doesn't get 'credited back' to the warranty period. Grrr.

Hmm - I half agree. I will admit to being seduced by the image (though the functionality they claim is pretty impressive) but I won't admit to buying my iPod in order to try and look good (futile!) or improve my lowly social status. The reason? Nobody ever sees my iPod - it stays in my pocket. In the early days of the iPod, the white earphone wires were possibly a bit of a status symbol, but people don't really flaunt their iPods - not like driving a flash car, or even like putting your cell phone on the cafe table is it? Or do people flaunt them? Maybe I should start and see if it affects my social standing...

Here is something for all of you iPod-geeks: The craziest iPod accessories... (Yes I know it's in Norwegian, I can't help it...) Click on the link called "Bildeserie" under "Se det sprøeste iPod-tilbehøret". You'll get the ideas, the pictures are good...
Oh, and also, underneath you can see a picture of a USB-vacuum-cleaner. With a lamp so you can light up the dust. + more strange gadgets under that "Bildeserie"-link.
Anyone say something about technology fetishes...?
